Sarah's Europe trip

Sarah's ramblings about her trip to Europe March-July 2003

I doubt anyone checks this anymore, but i'm going back to Europe in 4 weeks :D I loved it so much i couldn't stay away for too long!

I got a cheap flight to London with Thomas Cook (a charter airline) that was only $600 CAD. And then i'll be flying off to my dad's in Bratislava (via Prague and then a 5 hour train ride) for 3 weeks. And then i get to spend New years with my boyfriend in the UK :D So excited and can't believe i'm going in 4 weeks :D

well i made it home, can't say the same for my luggage unfortunately! My backpack seems to have been left in Vienna, but hopefully it'll make it here soon! My snowboard made it though and that's what really counts :-)

Shannon and i are both flying in on Tuesday, so we were thinking of having a get together on Wednseday or thursday night...i'll let ya know later. Anyhoo, see you all very soon :-)

So I’m sick! I’ve been sick for almost a week, and it sucks! I barely have a voice and my sinuses are so congested. Ugggg, anyhow, that’s why I haven’t updated this lately, all I’ve been doing is sleeping and resting.

Yesterday was quite fun though, my dad said we were going out for dinner, and I wasn’t going to bring my passport but grabbed it at the last minute. Which ended up being a good idea because we ended up at a winery in Austria for dinner :-) We were going to go to Hungary but decided that it would be too late by the time we got home.

And today we’re going to a cabin near the Czech border, so more cross boarder adventures are sure to come in the next week.

I really can’t believe that I’m gonna be home in 2 and a half weeks. Too soon, but that’s life…school in just over a month is quite scary as I’m not sure if I’m ready to go back!

*Sigh* the pink palace is everything that i've ever heard about it plus some. I'm more relaxed now than i have been in years and it's awesome! Our 3 days turned into 7, which the staff laugh at because it happens so often. There's a nightclub in the resort, which allows for lots of fun although too many late nights. We've been napping a lot though! Heehee our normal day is to wake up at 10:30 to make it to breakfast by 11, and then back up to bed until 2 or 3, then we head down to the beach until about 5 or 6, and then shower and clean up for dinner at 8:30, and then dance the night away until usually 3AM. It's great fun, although it's gonna be hard to get back onto a regular schedule after this. And sadly today we're leaving this amazing place :-(

On the fourth of july they had a toga party which was so much fun. Everyone wears pink satin togas and drink ouzo this greek liquor that tastes like licorice and then they break plates over your head. I even got to save a piece of the plate as a souvenir They also had greek dancers but i missed them. Shannon, Karen and i all felt like barbie when we were trying to get our togas on though :-) It was great fun, even though it wasn't canada day :-( The canadians beat the americans at the drinking contest though so i guess that makes up for it!!! In my heart it was canada day :-)

I really can hardly believe that this part of my trip is almost over. It's been a great 2 months and i'm really sad that it's over. I'll never forget the millions of memories i've made and all the friends i've made along the way. Although it will be good to be back in Vancouver in a month, i'll always remember lying on the beach in Greece :-) Although i don't think my liver can handle anymore of Greece at this point ;-)

If i don't update this page for the next bit, i'm sorry....i'll probably be sleeping for the next week :-) That is if i survive the 36 hour trip back to my dad's......

Hi everyone! Just relaxing at the pink palace on Corfu in Greece. It's absolutely amazing here except that everything is painted pink! And to think that not even a month ago i refused to even consider coming here...now shannon, Karen and i are relaxing in a airconditioned hotel room and get breakfast and dinner cooked for us everyday...i'm beginning to understand why people choose resorts. The cool thing is that it isn't even that much more expensive than the hostels we were staying at in Paris, Rome and London. So yeah, I'm off to the beach to work on my already incredible tan!

Happy Canada day to everyone...we spent it on a ferry/cruise ship between Italy and Greece swimming in the pool, drinking coronas and lounging on deck chairs! It was awesome :-)

Wow, Rome is sooooo hot! I swear it's 40 degrees out there...hence why i'm in an internet cafe (air conditioned of course) in the middle of the day.

Venice ended up being a lot of fun, although i didn't enjoy all the tourists that were swarming around the whole city. It was interesting to take ferries instead of buses/metros all the time. The hostel i stayed at was right on the side of one of the islands, so at night we would get bottles of wine and sit, drink, and dangle our feet into the canal...until we noticed our blisters felt like they were burning.... I ended up spending 3 nights there because it was a cheapish hostel, and i wanted to relax on my last day there so i went to the beach with a girl from amsterdam that i met at the hostel. She also offered me a place to stay in amsterdam when i go there in august so that's awesome. We pretty much roasted on the beach and talked, swam in the warmest ocean water i've been in so far, and then got ice cream, it was a good day! I absolutely can't stand Italian men though, they're such pigs...but i guess that explains Brad :-)

Then I took the train to a town called Riomaggiore which is part of cinque terre for any of you who know italy. It's this cool area where there are these 5 fishing villages that you can hike between, it is also where i met up with Shannon and Karen again. On our first full day there we did the hike which was amazing. It was through vineyards and olive groves, and most of the time being right by the water. It was soooooooo hot though, we drank so much water but it was worth it. It took all day too, we just wanted to collapse when we got back to our room. Then the next day we just hung out on the beach and tanned some more (we're trying to blend into the italian population which think that SPF 15 is adequate for kids!). Then Shannon and I went kayaking along the coast which was so fun. It was the first time i'd gone kayaking but i absolutely loved it (new expensive sport for me). I ate pizza every night we were there though cuz it was only 5 euro for a pizza so shannon, karen and i shared them a lot!

Then we came to Rome, which is the hottest city i have been in so far. It's been between 30 and 35 degrees everyday, with about 70% humidity. We're drenched in sweat from the moment we walk out of the hostel in the morning until we get in the shower at night. And yet the italian men still make comments all the time. It's also hard to sleep cuz it's so hot. The night we arrived we got taken on a walk around the main sights by Shannon and Karens tour guide, which was great cuz it was about 10PM and it had cooled down a bit by then. Also it was amazing to see all the ancient ruins lit up at night. Then yesterday we went to the vatican, although we missed seeing the pope by one day. It was still neat to see the vatican and the sistine chapel. Then last night we went on a pub crawl that was put on by the hostel and it turned out to be lots of fun! We didn't get to sleep until around 4 or so though, so we aren't doing much today...actually as i type this shannon and karen are up in our room sleeping! And tomorrow, we're off to a place called the Amalfi coast in southern italy, and we're just gonna lie on the beach for a few days before heading to Greece to do the same thing for 10 days! heehee what a hard life i have! Anyhow, i feel like i'm writing to myself cuz noone emails me anymore :-( Maybe i should send out annoying mass emails!!!! Hahahahahahaha
